In conjunction with Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th President of the United States, a groundbreaking initiative titled the “Stargate Project” was announced by OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and the White House, with additional investment from the UAE’s AI-focused investment firm, MGX. The project aims to construct OpenAI’s next-generation AI infrastructure over the next four years, with an estimated budget of $5 trillion.
Under the Stargate initiative, OpenAI will oversee operations, while SoftBank will manage the financial aspects, with its CEO, Masayoshi Son, serving as chairman. The initial phase of this state-of-the-art AI infrastructure is planned to be established in Texas, though alternative locations are also under consideration.
Key technical collaborators for the project include Oracle, Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and OpenAI itself, collectively integrating cutting-edge AI technologies to achieve unparalleled computational performance. These partners will share AI infrastructure resources, further enhancing the synergy of their collective capabilities.
In a related statement, OpenAI reaffirmed its enduring partnerships with NVIDIA and Microsoft, emphasizing its continued reliance on Microsoft’s Azure cloud services. Notably, the new infrastructure will serve as an additional source of computational power, complementing existing Azure resources.
Microsoft has also revised its collaborative agreement with OpenAI. Previously, OpenAI was restricted to using Microsoft-provided infrastructure for computational needs. However, due to Microsoft’s inability to fully meet OpenAI’s growing demands, the updated agreement now permits OpenAI to procure computational resources from other vendors, although Microsoft retains the right to limit the use of specific cloud services.
Despite these adjustments, the partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI remains steadfast. For instance, OpenAI’s AI services API can still only be accessed through Azure, and Microsoft’s Copilot continues to rely on OpenAI’s advanced AI models.
