LMDE 3 is coming soon, Cinnamon 4.0 is accelerating the development
The Linux Mint team shared a regular status update of their work over the past month, including processing some package updates and preparing to release a beta version of Linux Mint Debian Edition 3 (LMDE 3).
This month they dealt with a lot of headaches, especially the issues raised by the stable version of Ubuntu around Mesa and GRUB. In addition to other regression errors, there is a kernel issue that needs to be addressed.
The LMDE 3 release is coming soon and is currently in QA, but developers say the end of July should release the LMDE 3 Beta. Also, they plan to install LMDE 3 using their real-time installer and the Calamares-based installer option.
For Cinnamon, although Cinnamon 3.8 released before Linux Mint 19, engineers are already developing Cinnamon 4.0, and Cinnamon 4.0 will be more focused on providing better performance, especially around vblank that may be turned off. Disabling vblank for desktop synthesisers usually offers better performance, but can lead to “screen-tearing” situations. To solve this problem, you need to use at least NVIDIA’s proprietary graphics driver. If you enable NVIDIA’s forced synthesis pipeline option, you can disable the synthesiser vblank’ing without screen splitting. Linux Mint developers are testing various GPU/driver options and hope to bring some improvements to Cinnamon 4.0’s vblank performance.
