The GNOME Project Opens Its Own OS to Everyone
The GNOME project has released a public GNOME OS preview. It ships with the GNOME 51.1 desktop.
Most people meet GNOME through distributions such as Fedora Linux or Ubuntu. GNOME OS is different. The project builds it as a complete Linux system. It joins the desktop, core components, and update mechanism into one bootable image for testing and showcasing the GNOME software stack.
What GNOME OS Is
For a long time, GNOME OS mainly served developers and testers. The project used it to check how the desktop and its components behave together on a real system.
The earlier nightly builds merge the latest development code from every component. They suit testing and development. However, they do not suit ordinary users who need a stable system.
An Image-Based Design
GNOME OS updates through system images. It has no traditional package manager such as apt or dnf. Instead, systemd-sysupdate handles system updates, and Flatpak installs most graphical apps.
This design lets the GNOME team test the desktop, the app platform, and the low-level components in one uniform environment.
A Stable Branch and Regular Downloads
The preview uses stable, officially released components. This release carries GNOME 51.1. Meanwhile, the nightly builds keep following the newest development code. Both versions remain available, so users can pick the one that fits their needs.
How to Try It
The GNOME website offers x64 and Arm64 images. Users can install the system on a physical computer or run it in a virtual machine with GNOME Boxes.
The preview builds on the existing GNOME OS. According to the project lead, it suits non-developers better than the nightly builds.
A Word of Caution
The preview is still new. Developers have not tested it widely across hardware. Therefore, anyone planning a physical install should expect rough edges.
The safest choice is a spare machine. That way, any problem will not disrupt daily work.
