How Telematics Gives Customers Personalized Insurance Options

One of your goals is to keep customers happy when you’re an insurance company. However, the competition in the market can be very cutthroat, considering there is a limited market. So if you want a decent market share for your business, you must give your clients something special. This situation is where personalized insurance options come in. Instead of paying a set fee, you offer to provide them with variable premiums depending on use. It sounds complex, but it is now possible because of telematics.

Telematics basics

Telematics is a combination of two technologies. One is telecommunications, which allows sending information across vast distances; the other is informatics, which covers computer systems. Essentially, it will enable people to send data to computers across various distances, allowing them to do multiple things from simple monitoring to actual control. It has found its niche in monitoring fleets of vehicles. For example, delivery companies with dozens of trucks can know precisely where they are and their condition. This monitoring allows for increased efficiency.

How it works for insurance companies

Telematics insurance is also a prime market for insurance companies. Car monitoring is perfect for car insurance plans. A telematics device has several components that send various bits of information, starting with GPS location, vehicle speed, fuel consumption, and even seat belt usage. All of the data is useful to insurance companies since it can allow them to process the claim quickly and make decisions about the compensation. For example, if the telematic data shows that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, you might release a smaller compensation.

The benefits for customers

However, the real draw of telematics technology for insurance companies is how it allows for personalized insurance options for its customers. With the monitoring, customers will be able to lower their premiums through good behavior. For example, to return to the example of seat belts, your company would know how frequently your customer uses their seatbelts. If they always use it during their drive, you can be sure that the driver is cautious, which means they have a lower chance of accidents. As a result, they will appreciate getting a discount for this behavior.

Other risky behaviors that your telematics equipment can monitor are hard braking and rapid acceleration. Hard braking means the client often stops suddenly, which can lead to injuries like whiplash and more. Additionally, it can damage the car’s transmission and brakes, leading to future accidents. Rapid acceleration is another dangerous action that can signal the driver is not careful.

Finally, your team can monitor how often the client uses the car. Longer drives and frequent use mean there is a high chance for accidents. If your customer only uses the car four times a month, you can afford to offer a lower premium.

Final thoughts

The core behind a good business is offering a better deal than your competition. With telematics, you provide more than a good deal with your insurance plan. You are giving your clients exactly what they need, which is even more critical. Consider adding telematics to your company’s car insurance offerings soon.
