Nvidia confirmed the hacking incident: NVIDIA DLSS source code leaked
Nvidia was the victim of a cyberattack last week, in which hackers breached Nvidia’s internal servers, causing more than a terabyte of data to be leaked, including drivers, design drawings, and firmware. The hacker group has confirmed that it has obtained some information about the LHR algorithm and used this to coerce Nvidia to remove the relevant restrictions on its own. However, Nvidia has not really confirmed the incident in the past few days.
“On February 23, 2022, NVIDIA became aware of a cybersecurity incident which impacted IT resources. Shortly after discovering the incident, we further hardened our network, engaged cybersecurity incident response experts, and notified law enforcement.
We have no evidence of ransomware being deployed on the NVIDIA environment or that this is related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, we are aware that the threat actor took employee credentials and some NVIDIA proprietary information from our systems and has begun leaking it online. Our team is working to analyze that information. We do not anticipate any disruption to our business or our ability to serve our customers as a result of the incident.
Security is a continuous process that we take very seriously at NVIDIA – and we invest in the protection and quality of our code and products daily.”
But things may not be so simple, and Nvidia may have a series of troubles ahead. TechPowerUp said it received screenshots from an anonymous source showing NVIDIA DLSS source code files on the list, the content of the document looks very credible, and it is the newer DLSS version 2.2. NVIDIA DLSS is a proprietary technology that NVIDIA has been promoting in recent years and is considered one of the technical means superior to competitors. It’s a huge loss for Nvidia when developers look at the code and get a sense of its inner workings.
Theft of intellectual property is a big deal, and Nvidia’s legal team should be busy in the near future. For legal and security reasons, we also do not encourage anyone to download these leaked materials.
