An engineer at System76 wrote in their tech blog: “The work with elementary focused on the user experience of installation, drive partitioning, dual-boot, and full-disk encryption, which is considered as an integral part of security and privacy, So this should be a default option. ”
System76 wants to provide a Linux PC that has encryption by default
As an OEM, System76 is known for its privacy and security focus and their future goal is to provide Linux PCs with encryption by default. They solved the challenge of implementing full-scale encryption to the installer and managed to provide a better experience for installing Pop! _OS Linux.
The new installer’s work was led by elementary Daniel Foré, who was responsible for user experience and front-end implementation of this part of the job, while System76’s engineers focused on the installer’s back-end implementation.
Achieve a consistent workflow
Before want to encrypt the System76 PC, users need to reinstall the operating system with disk encryption. Or, buy a pre-encrypted computer, but this requires that each user has a unique key, which in turn is a lack of security. So it is a viable option to provide full disk encryption through the installer at first installation.
