UBports community ported Unity 8 Desktop Environment for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
The UBports community announced that it has ported the Unity 8 desktop environment that PCs have been deprecated by Canonical for installation during the initial development phase. Last year, Canonical decided to stop developing the Unity 8 desktop environment for subsequent versions of the Ubuntu and Ubuntu Touch systems, followed by some loyal members of the community who announced the takeover of Unity 8 development, most notably Yunit.
However, the Yunit project did not improve the desktop Unity 8 environment over the past few months, as the community had hoped, and after lengthy hard work and careful consideration, they decided to hand over the character to the UBports team.
Marius Gripsgård, the project leader at UBports, said: “Just when you thought that Unity 8 and the dreams of convergence were fading, we’re introducing today the Unity 8 UBports edition with Bionic Beaver support on GitHub to reignite the fire and rebuild the dream.”
UBports maintained by the first Unity 8 desktop version with the latest Mir 0.30 display server supports the next generation of Wayland display server, convinced UBports team will continue to improve in order to support the Wayland do you like to run Linux applications.
