User Outcry Forces Google to Resume Chrome Support on Ubuntu 18.04
Google unexpectedly discontinued support for the Chrome browser on the current long-term support operating system, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS “Bionic Beaver,” with the release of Chrome 128. This decision sparked a wave of discontent among users, as the browser ceased to function without additional system adjustments.
Initially, the company did not plan to address the issue. However, after numerous complaints from the Linux community, Google reconsidered its stance. A Google representative acknowledged that the sudden withdrawal of support caught many users off guard. Consequently, the decision was made to reinstate support for Ubuntu 18.04, albeit temporarily.
Google promised to release an update that would restore Chrome’s compatibility with this version of the operating system by next week. Nevertheless, the company still intends to phase out support for Ubuntu 18.04 in the future. This time, however, Google pledged to provide advance notice to users before discontinuing support, rather than abruptly “flipping the switch.”
It is crucial to install the new Chrome 128 version, as it contains critical security updates. However, on Ubuntu 18.04, the update fails to install due to incompatibility with the system library libgcc-s1, causing further complications for users.
Technology expert Loren W. noted that many Ubuntu 18.04 users are still receiving long-term support from Canonical until 2028, and transitioning to newer OS versions may be challenging for them.
For those unable to wait for Google’s official fix, Loren suggested a temporary workaround to upgrade Chrome 127 to version 128, though he warned that success is not guaranteed. He also emphasized that tampering with system libraries could render the system inoperable.
