Windows 11 22H2 will receive security updates only after Feb. 27, 2024
Windows 11 version 22H2 has recently received the Windows 11 Moment 4 update, imbued with an array of new features. However, this update marks the final feature update for Windows 11 22H2, as next year’s Moment 5 and subsequent versions will only support Windows 11 23H2 or Windows 12.
Microsoft has also announced that optional non-security updates for Windows 11 22H2 will cease on February 27, 2024. On this date, Microsoft will release the last optional update for Windows 11 22H2. It stated:
IMPORTANT After February 27, 2024, there will no longer be optional, non-security preview releases for Windows 11, version 22H2. Only cumulative monthly security updates will continue for the supported editions of Windows 11, version 22H2.
The so-called optional non-security updates, referred to as C/D type optional updates, do not include vulnerability fixes. Instead, they focus on adding new functionalities, optimizing features, and correcting errors, distinguishing them from the B-type stable version updates.
B-type stable version updates, which are automatically pushed to users, include vulnerability fixes. In contrast, C/D type optional updates, embodying a more experimental nature, are only installed when a user opts to check for updates. If these tests prove successful, they are later integrated into the B-type updates and rolled out to all users the following month.
The consumer version of Windows 11 22H2 has a lifecycle that extends until October 8, 2024. Post this date, the consumer version will no longer receive updates, and it is currently unclear whether the enterprise version will receive an additional year of support.
Therefore, users still on Windows 11 22H2 might consider upgrading to Windows 11 23H2, which, in essence, is a rebranded version of 22H2 with no significant differences.
