5 Tips For RV Beginners

Want to go on the ultimate RV road trip this year but don’t know where to start? We’re here to help.

RVs have nestled their way into the hearts of keen campers everywhere – and it’s very easy to see why. Whether you’re old or young, traveling in an RV has plenty to offer in terms of comfort, safety, and style. But it can also be a little intimidating, especially if you are planning to venture out in an RV for the first time.

If you’re an RV beginner, here are 5 tips to ease your mind.

1. Choose Whether To Rent Or Buy

Deciding whether to rent or buy an RV can be quite a difficult decision. This is because there are pros and cons for both options. But if you take a closer look, the answer will become clear. You should buy pop up campers.

Buy: This is a great option if you are planning to go full-time and take frequent camping trips in your RV. There is also plenty of storage for times when you aren’t traveling but are in need of some extra space.

Rent: You should rent an RV rather than purchase one if you plan to take a single trip, or if you simply want to test out the concept of having an RV before committing to the purchase.

2. Get to Know The RV

As an RV beginner, you likely don’t have much road experience with this type of vehicle. This means that it is extremely vital that you take the time to learn about the motor home and understand how it works, even if you are only renting the vehicle.

After you get to know your RV, you’re far less likely to make any kind of operational error. For example, if you aren’t sure about the number of amps that the main breaker can handle in total, there is a likelihood that you will cause more damage. This could be an expensive error, however, it can be largely avoided by getting to grips with your RV.

3. Pack Using A Checklist

Whether you rent or buy an RV, you will be truly amazed by just how much space it has. However, if you aren’t careful with how much stuff you take with you and the way you store it, then you’ll fill up your cabinets very quickly.

To prevent this issue from arising, you should make a checklist to narrow down the items you take with you. This will prevent your RV from being cluttered or overloaded – which could void your insurance.

Make sure to mainly take the essentials with you including tools, a headlamp, a first aid kit, batteries, and a tire pressure gauge for when you’re on the road. Feel free to take some fun extras in case the weather is nice such as folding lawn chairs, sports equipment, and even a grill.

If you want to make some delicious food while on your trip, you might want to look at the best RV grills currently on the market to see which one suits you best!

4. Practice Driving The RV

Taking a practice drive is one of the most important things you need to do before heading out for an RV trip. You should also practice towing the travel trailer.

Much like any other regular car, you must ensure that you can get a feel for how the RV drives. This is mainly because an RV is much larger than a typical vehicle on the roads, meaning it has to be handled differently.

Driving an RV for long distances and reversing the vehicle can pose a significant challenge to any RV beginner. Fortunately, RV rental companies will often provide a service where you can practice and learn to sharpen your RV driving skills before heading out on the road.

5. Don’t Underestimate The Size Of The RV

RVs are huge vehicles that will require lots of careful handling that you may not usually have with average cars. When you gain confidence in your RV driving skills, you’ll probably even forget that you’re driving such a big vehicle!

Regardless, you must make sure to drive it carefully and to pay extra attention to the height of your RV – especially if you are driving through tunnels or a narrow alley – to make the most out of your trip.

Conclusion

Whether you’re planning to go for a long RV trip or just around the corner, you can rest assured that you will enjoy the RV high life. As long as you drive carefully and follow the tips mentioned above, you’ll be well-equipped for a fun-filled trip!
