Microsoft had previously been testing an AI-powered version of Notepad through the Windows Insider Preview program. Following successful trials, this feature is now being rolled out to the stable channel of Windows 11.
The updated Notepad application, version 11.2412.16.0, is now available for users to download via the Microsoft Store. Upon upgrading, those with an active Microsoft 365 subscription will gain access to AI-assisted text editing capabilities within Notepad.
The AI-powered rewrite function offers three modes: expanding or condensing content, adjusting tone, and modifying formatting. Microsoft asserts that these options enable users to tailor their text for specific purposes while preserving the original content within the interface. Users can review the rewritten version before finalizing the replacement.
The tone adjustment feature provides several presets, including formal, casual, inspirational, and humorous styles. Meanwhile, the formatting options encompass paragraph structuring, lists, business-oriented layouts, academic styles, marketing content, and even poetic compositions.
Microsoft has confirmed that this functionality is powered by a fine-tuned version of OpenAI’s GPT model, integrated with Microsoft Copilot AI to assist users in refining their text.
It is important to note that this feature is exclusive to Microsoft 365 subscribers, meaning users must sign in with their Microsoft account to access it. If a user does not have an active subscription, they will be prompted to subscribe before utilizing the AI-assisted editing tools.
However, users in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada can access the rewrite functionality for free without a subscription. Instead, they will receive a limited allocation of credits, though Microsoft has not specified the exact number. Once these credits are depleted, users must wait until the following month for a refresh or opt for a $20-per-month Microsoft Copilot Pro subscription to unlock unlimited access.
After upgrading to the latest Notepad version, users will notice a magic wand icon in the top-right corner of the interface. By selecting a portion of text and clicking the icon, they can choose from the available rewrite options to enhance or modify their content accordingly.
