Google initially released the developer preview of Android 16 in late November last year, confirming that the official version would arrive in the second quarter of this year. During MWC 2025, Google reaffirmed that Android 16’s stable release is set for June.
Sameer Samat, President of Google’s Android Ecosystem, disclosed at MWC 2025 that the company remains on track to officially launch Android 16 in June. Currently, the second beta version has already been made available to developers. Additionally, Google has adopted the Trunk Stable development model, reducing the intervals between security patch rollouts and accelerating the overall release cycle to ensure a more stable user experience.
Over the years, Google has continuously expedited Android system updates and introduced a modular update approach. This strategy allows chipset manufacturers and telecom operators to implement updates tailored to their specific needs while enabling Google to execute system updates according to a predefined schedule. Unlike in the past—when updates had to be compiled and released in large-scale rollouts—this modular approach facilitates more efficient and timely upgrades.
Samat further noted that global users now have increasingly high expectations for Android OS feature enhancements and frequent updates. Meanwhile, smartphone brands are also accelerating their product launch cycles, necessitating a swifter update cadence for Android. Through modularization, certain features can now be updated independently, expediting the integration of new functionalities and enhancing the overall user experience.
Moreover, Google has officially confirmed that Google I/O 2025 will take place on May 20. The event will primarily focus on Gemini AI advancements and the unveiling of Android 16, offering a glimpse into the future roadmap of Android’s evolution.
