Apple is currently testing an AI-generated review summarization feature for select apps and games in the U.S. market. This feature previews real user reviews and then generates an AI-driven summary, allowing users to grasp the general sentiment of an app without manually sifting through individual reviews.
At present, the Apple App Store prioritizes displaying the most helpful reviews. However, many average or negative reviews are not shown by default, requiring users to manually switch to the latest reviews to access a broader spectrum of feedback.
The newly introduced AI-generated summaries will aggregate existing user reviews to provide a comprehensive assessment. To ensure authenticity and accuracy, Apple plans to update these summaries weekly, reflecting the latest user sentiments. Naturally, for the AI-generated summaries to be meaningful, an app must have a sufficient volume of user reviews—if a particular app or game has too few, no summary will be generated, as AI cannot fabricate feedback out of thin air.
According to Apple’s developer site, this feature is currently in limited testing for select apps and games within the U.S. market. Over the next year, Apple intends to expand the test to additional markets and support more languages.
To maintain fairness, accuracy, and transparency, developers will be able to submit reports to request revisions to AI-generated summaries, while users can flag issues by long-pressing a review to provide feedback to Apple.
Since this feature operates via cloud processing rather than on-device computation, it is expected to be available on all iPhones that support the App Store, without requiring the latest hardware such as the iPhone 15 series.
