In December, 2024, OpenAI revealed that ChatGPT’s weekly active users had surpassed 300 million. This marks a significant surge from August 2024, when the platform had “only” 200 million weekly active users—indicating a remarkable increase of 100 million users in just a few months.
Yet, the most revelation came this week, as OpenAI disclosed that ChatGPT’s weekly active user base has now reached 400 million. This means that in the span of just a few weeks, another 100 million users have joined the platform. If this exponential growth continues, ChatGPT is projected to hit the milestone of 500 million weekly active users by June. Given the scale of the global population and the rapid evolution of the AI industry, it is difficult to predict just how vast ChatGPT’s user base might become in the coming years.
In the realm of social networking, Facebook—owned by Meta—currently boasts the largest user base, with 3.15 billion monthly active users. Meanwhile, in the search engine domain, Google Search commands approximately 5 billion users.
As an emerging force in the artificial intelligence sector, ChatGPT may still face challenges in surpassing Google’s user base. However, at its current trajectory, it may not take many years to reach a scale comparable to Facebook’s.
Nevertheless, OpenAI has not disclosed the number of paying subscribers. While the $20-per-month ChatGPT Plus subscription continues to attract a significant number of users, indications from OpenAI executives regarding potential in-chat advertising suggest that the revenue generated from paid subscriptions remains insufficient. To sustain its operations and fund further model development, OpenAI will likely need to explore additional revenue streams.
