Coinbase, the virtual currency trading platform, yesterday announced the opening of the Coinbase open-source fund, which will donate $2,500 a month to open source projects. “Specific projects will be selected monthly by the members of Coinbase’s engineering team based on Coinbase’s current and future use.”, as well as projects that they believe will be more beneficial to the entire open source community, with no big business sponsorship.

Coinbase said in the article, many open source projects used to build the platform need to be supported to continue the development, either contribution code or financial support. However, like other fast-growing start-ups, Coinbase’s main focus is on how to grow and grow the company without enough time and resources to help them.

When the fund is established, donations will be made monthly to these open source projects on an ongoing basis and whenever possible supported by the purchase of paid enterprise editions of these open source projects. The first month’s donations are as follows:

  1. Mobx — $1000
  2. Webpack — $500
  3. Babel — $500
  4. Styled-components — $500
