A recent research report by Counterpoint Research reveals that, despite the long-standing promotion of eSIM technology and the availability of eSIM services from numerous telecom providers, a significant portion of respondents remain unaware of eSIMs. Among those familiar with eSIM technology, only about 39% are actual users.
The report’s findings are based on a survey of 3,535 respondents from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Poland, and Japan—regions where telecom services are well-developed. Although the sample size is relatively small, it provides a meaningful insight into the adoption and usage of eSIM technology.
Only 35% of respondents were aware of eSIM technology, and among them, merely 39% were active users. Notably, of these users, an impressive 90% expressed satisfaction with their eSIM experience.
This high level of satisfaction underscores the convenience of eSIM technology, which simplifies switching between telecom networks, transferring SIM card data, and accessing eSIM network services in other countries while traveling—all without the need to frequently remove and replace physical SIM cards.
However, the limited awareness and adoption of eSIMs may be attributed to consumers perceiving no compelling reason to replace their long-used traditional SIM cards, or even preferring the familiarity of physical SIM cards. Additionally, aside from Apple’s iPhone lineup, which universally supports eSIM functionality, many brands restrict eSIM compatibility to mid-to-high-end or flagship models, further hampering widespread adoption.
If Apple proceeds with plans to eliminate the traditional SIM card slot entirely in future iPhone models, fully embracing eSIM technology, it could potentially set a trend for other smartphone brands to follow. This shift may lead to thinner devices, increased battery capacity, and, ultimately, a higher adoption rate for eSIM technology.
