The popular desktop operating system Ubuntu has officially unveiled the release schedule for its upcoming Long-Term Support (LTS) edition. Specifically, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS will enter its feature freeze phase on February 19, 2026, with the final stable release slated for April 23, 2026.
Users currently running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or Ubuntu 25.10 will receive the new LTS update at different times. Those on version 25.10 will be able to upgrade immediately following the release, while 24.04 LTS users must wait until the launch of Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS before upgrading.
The detailed release timeline is as follows:
- February 19, 2026: Feature freeze for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
- March 12, 2026: User interface freeze
- March 19, 2026: Kernel feature freeze
- March 23, 2026: Beta freeze
- March 26, 2026: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Beta release
- April 9, 2026: Kernel freeze
- April 16, 2026: Final freeze and release candidate (RC) phase begins
- April 23, 2026: Official release of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
- August 6, 2026: Official release of Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS
This version will carry a five-year support cycle, extending through 2031. To ensure the stability and reliability expected of an LTS release, users of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will only be able to upgrade once 26.04.1 LTS becomes available, meaning a bit more patience will be required for those on the current LTS branch.
The upcoming release is expected to introduce a range of enhancements, including GNOME 50, an updated Linux kernel and graphics drivers, additional core components rewritten in Rust, expanded TPM-based encryption support, and a collection of new wallpapers, among other improvements.
