Google Narrows Free Access to Gemini Models
Google is changing model access in the Gemini app. According to Google’s official documentation, the change starts on October 9, 2026.
From that date, users on personal accounts without a Google AI subscription can use only the Gemini Flash-Lite model. Other models, such as Gemini Flash and Gemini Pro, will no longer be open to free users.
Model Access Now Follows the Subscription Plan
Google has rebuilt model access into tiers based on subscription plans.
- Free personal accounts: Gemini Flash-Lite only.
- Google AI Plus: Gemini Flash-Lite and Gemini Flash, but no Gemini Pro models.
- Google AI Pro and AI Ultra: Gemini Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.
The exact start date for AI Plus may vary by account. Google says affected users will receive an email notice.
What the Change Means for Users
Under the new tiers, the free version of Gemini offers only basic AI service. Advanced models become a premium feature of paid plans.
For users who ask simple questions, rewrite text, or look up everyday facts, the impact may be limited. However, people who need stronger reasoning, complex coding, or long-content analysis may need to upgrade.
Personal Accounts and the Gemini App Only
The change targets the Gemini web version and the Gemini app on personal accounts. It does not yet affect the Gemini API, AI Studio, or Google Workspace.
Users of those products have received no notice from Google. Therefore, no change applies for now. They can keep using the related models at their current pace.
Of course, these products are already paid or free only in limited amounts. As a result, Google may not make large changes to them.
