By default, Gmail’s search function ranks results chronologically, allowing users to locate past emails based on their position in the timeline.
However, when users frequently send emails containing certain recurring keywords—and when such messages accumulate in large volumes—it may still take a considerable amount of time to find a specific email, even with the search feature.
To address this, Google has announced an upgrade to Gmail’s search functionality. The enhanced version is powered by artificial intelligence, which takes into account various factors—such as the time an email was sent or received, the number of times it has been clicked, and commonly contacted recipients—to generate a more intelligent, holistic ranking.
This means that going forward, search results will no longer be sorted strictly by date. Instead, Google hopes the new AI-driven system will enable users to locate their desired emails more swiftly and intuitively.
Nonetheless, recognizing that some users may prefer chronological order or may encounter difficulties locating messages under specific circumstances, Google will still offer the option to sort results by time. Users can simply toggle between the “most relevant” and “most recent” views.
Should users opt for the “most recent” setting, search results will revert to the traditional format, displaying emails in the order they were sent or received, with the newest messages appearing at the top.
This feature is currently being rolled out gradually to users worldwide. It is already available on the web version of Gmail, as well as on the Gmail apps for iOS and Android. Initially, access is limited to individual users, with enterprise support planned for a future phase.
Meanwhile, many users have long criticized Gmail’s search experience as subpar, and some now fear that introducing AI-based relevance sorting may worsen it. Longtime Gmail users are encouraged to try it for themselves and form their own judgments.
