Google lays off its Python team
Sources within Google reveal that the company had already laid off a team responsible for maintaining a stable version of Python several days ago. This team consisted of approximately ten full-time engineers. While not all were dismissed, the majority were indeed let go.
The primary function of this team was to uphold a stable Python environment within Google, thereby enabling other project teams, such as those working on machine learning, to develop using this platform.
Upgrading Python often introduces compatibility issues, particularly for a conglomerate like Google with its extensive product line. Consequently, each upgrade by the Python team could necessitate several months, or even up to a year, to implement.
The team also contributed to the wider Python development community. This aspect of their work will likely halt, highlighting a strategic shift for Google.
Google’s machine learning and AI teams heavily utilize Python. The absence of a dedicated support team indicates a possible decrease in the company’s reliance on Python or a cost-saving decision that will place maintenance responsibilities on individual product teams.
Currently, Google is intensively focusing on the development of artificial intelligence. Despite previous layoffs aimed at financial conservation and reallocating funds towards AI, the relatively small number of layoffs in this instance suggests that financial considerations may not have been the primary motive.
