According to Reuters, a top US Secret Service official said a hacking group used the “Jackpotting” attack to steal $1 million from an ATM machine that is linked to an international criminal syndicate.
ATM “jackpotting” — a sophisticated crime in which thieves install malicious software and/or hardware at ATMs that forces the machines to spit out huge volumes of cash on demand — has long been a threat for banks in Europe and Asia, yet these attacks somehow have eluded U.S. ATM operators.
Secret service criminal investigation team agent Matthew O’Neill said that in the past few days, hackers have successfully launched “Jackpotting” attacks. Hackers invade the ATM machine, let the machine spit a lot of cash. ATMs have been found attacked in various places in the United States. Attacks have been found in the area from the Gulf Coast in the southern United States to the New England region in the northeast.
O’Neal believes that successive attacks mean that the “Jackpotting” campaign will start to spread in the United States. In recent years, similar attacks have also taken place in Europe and Latin America. O’Neill said: “It was just a matter of time until it hit our shores”
