The hacker used the virus to destroy the Chilean bank’s computer system, but this was just to distract the bank staff and the hackers tried to steal $11 million through the SWIFT trading system at the same time. This attempt failed. The virus used by hackers was temporarily named as KillMBR by Trend Micro’s security researchers. As its name suggests, it disables the computer by destroying the computer’s master boot record (MBR).
The virus reportedly crashed more than 9,000 computers and more than 500 servers in Chilean banks. The attack occurred on May 24, resulting in a system-wide failure. Security researchers believe that the hacking organization that launched the attack had previously attacked Mexican foreign trade banks and tried to steal $110 million, but that attack also failed. The Trend Micro team believes that the attack on Chilean banks is a distraction strategy and the ultimate goal is the bank’s SWIFT network.
