Why does it feel as though HP laptops run into trouble every single day? Since August, HP laptop users have reported that Windows 11 develops anomalies after installing updates such as KB5121003. This is an update Microsoft released in August, and it is naturally bundled into the September updates as well.
Updates Install Repeatedly, Fail, and Then Roll Back
Judging from user feedback, the modifications delivered by Microsoft’s update appear to produce some kind of compatibility conflict with HP’s BIOS firmware. Users who encounter this problem will notice that the update installs and then, during the restart stage, becomes stuck at the boot screen. After a forced shutdown, the system announces that it needs to perform a repair. At that point, it automatically rolls back the update.
Some skeptical users manually downloaded the update and installed it again, only to meet the exact same outcome. Windows 11 also downloads and installs updates automatically. Therefore, if a user has not shut down, they may return to find the system stuck at the HP logo screen. As a result, they are forced once more to power off and run through the update-removal process.
The Temporary Fix: Reset the BIOS Settings
Following the solution HP support provides, users stuck at the boot screen can take these temporary steps. Press and hold the power button to force a shutdown. Press the power button and immediately tap F10 until the BIOS setup interface appears. Then press F9 to load the BIOS settings (this step resets the BIOS settings to their defaults). Next, press F10 to choose save and exit. After the restart, the system should boot normally.
Note that resetting the BIOS settings causes some user-customized settings to be lost, such as enabling hardware virtualization, fTPM, PXE, or altering various boot settings. Please re-enter the BIOS interface after the reset. Then configure these options again.
HP Has Released a BIOS Firmware Fix
HP has now confirmed that this problem is indeed related to the Windows 11 update. To address it, HP released the BIOS firmware update F.07 Rev.A (sp174502.exe). In the changelog, HP notes that the firmware update improves system stability when Windows Update is run. The firmware was released on September 4. Therefore, users of HP laptops are advised to update the BIOS firmware first before attempting to install the update. The update can be downloaded from the official HP laptop drivers and downloads page.
