Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has confirmed that the platform is currently testing a new “dislike” button, which will allow users to more effectively respond to offensive or irrelevant comments.
This feature is currently being rolled out on Reels and feed posts. However, it will only allow users to express their disapproval of comments, not the posts themselves.
The button will not display a count of “dislikes,” but it will be factored into the algorithm that determines how comments are sorted. This is similar to the negative voting system on Reddit, and Mosseri believes that this feature will make Instagram’s comments more reflective of reality.
Meta has stated that its goal in adding a “dislike” button is to improve the quality of comments. The feature is currently being tested by a small number of users, and Meta will expand the test depending on how it performs.
Twitter introduced a similar “dislike” button last year, allowing users to express their disagreement with a tweet. Facebook had previously considered adding a “dislike” button, but ultimately decided against it in favor of more nuanced ways to express emotions.
Meta’s decision to add a “dislike” button is a response to the growing concern about online harassment and bullying. The company hopes that the new feature will help to create a safer and more positive environment on Instagram.
