According to Microsoft, Windows Defender has surpassed third-party software in almost all areas of security testing, especially protection testing, 2000 malware samples, and only two of Windows Defender failed to detect it.
The findings of this report have been summarized below:
- Protection: Windows Defender Antivirus (Windows Defender AV) achieved a perfect score in Protection, maintaining consistently high scores in this category.
- Usability (false positives): Windows Defender AV achieved an improved Usability score of 5.5/6.0. Per our telemetry, samples that Windows Defender AV incorrectly classified (false positive) had very low prevalence and are not commonly used in business context.
- Performance: Windows Defender AV improved this cycle, achieving a 5.5/6.0 Performance score and outperforming the industry in almost all areas. These results reflect the investments we put in optimizing Windows Defender AV performance for high-frequency actions (e.g., application run).
However, Microsoft stressed that Windows Defender also has Advanced Threat Protection (ATP), combined with the security protection of the Windows 10 system. These two missing malware samples can also be detected and related threats can be eliminated.
In addition, in the performance testing session, Windows Defender scored 5.5 points (total score of 6 points) and was at the top level. All this proved that Microsoft’s continuous investment in the security field is effective.
Microsoft also recommends that users upgrade to Windows 10 because Windows Defender is not only a security software in the new system, but has evolved into a complete security solution with various advanced security features that can protect users to the greatest degree.
Of course, another reason why Windows Defender is recommended by Microsoft is not to say that it is basically impeccable compatibility with Windows systems, and that third-party killing of soft incompatibilities is always a headache.
For example, the recent Windows 10 April update caused the computer to become a brick on some user systems. The famous security software avast was not recognized after being suspected, and the result was ultimately confirmed as a result of its incompatibility.
