Microsoft Renames Remote Desktop to ‘Windows App’ on macOS: Mac Users React with Confusion
For a long time, the responsibility for Windows Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connections has been handled by Microsoft Remote Desktop. However, Microsoft now plans to rename Remote Desktop to Windows App.
Currently, the Mac version of the Microsoft Remote Desktop application already displays a notice indicating that in an upcoming update, the app will adopt the new name, Windows App.
Typically, users of Remote Desktop are professionals, with ordinary users rarely utilizing this feature. Therefore, Microsoft’s decision to rename it is perplexing, as the name Windows App is rather ambiguous.
Windows is the name of the operating system, and “App” refers to an application. Renaming Remote Desktop to Windows App seems to increase the difficulty for users to distinguish it, as the name does not strongly suggest a connection to Remote Desktop.
In addition to Windows App, Microsoft also has a Windows 365 App, which is a dedicated application for Microsoft’s Windows 365 Cloud PC. This name, however, poses no significant issue.
The good news is that the renaming of Remote Desktop only affects non-Windows platforms—i.e., the iOS, Android, and Mac versions will be renamed to Windows App, while in the Windows system, it will still be referred to as Remote Desktop Connection.
Lastly, this renaming has sparked considerable discussion on the X platform, with some users speculating that the images were fabricated. They argue that Microsoft would never choose a name as uninspired and potentially confusing as Windows App. However, this is indeed a fact, not a fabrication.
