OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has revealed plans to launch the o3-mini artificial intelligence model within the coming weeks.
The o3 AI model, first announced in late December last year, boasts significantly improved performance compared to its predecessor, o1. OpenAI highlighted this by citing the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) as an example, where o3 achieved an impressive accuracy rate of 96.7%, surpassing o1’s 83.3%.
thank you to the external safety researchers who tested o3-mini.
we have now finalized a version and are beginning the release process; planning to ship in ~a couple of weeks.
also, we heard the feedback: will launch api and chatgpt at the same time!

In addition to unveiling the o3 model, OpenAI introduced a compact variant called o3-mini. This model incorporates an Adaptive Thinking Time feature, allowing users to adjust the reasoning duration of the AI model. This functionality enables the AI to allocate varying amounts of time for reasoning before providing answers.
According to OpenAI, the o3-mini offers performance equivalent to o1 but at a significantly reduced operational cost. It is slated for release by the end of January 2025, with the o3 model expected to follow its debut.
