[Official] Microsoft Announces $7.5 Billion Acquisition of GitHub

Just recently, Microsoft announced that it had acquired a code-hosting platform GitHub for US$7.5 billion. The acquisition agreement has been reached. According to the process, the acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Microsoft expects that this acquisition will increase its operating profit for the fiscal year 2020 on the basis of adjustments.

In the article, Microsoft stated that developers are the creators of this new era. They write code for the world, and GitHub is their “home,” where each developer can work together to create, collaborate, share code, and contribute to each other.

More than 28 million developers have collaborated on GitHub and have hosted more than 85 million code bases. Microsoft is a developer-centric company. Building technology and sharing it with others is its mission and core values. GitHub is a base for developers to learn, share, and grow. It is also Microsoft’s “destination.”

After the acquisition, GitHub will remain an open platform and retain its developer-first style and operate independently.

Nat Friedman, Microsoft’s vice president and founder of Xamarin, will serve as CEO. GitHub’s current CEO, Chris Wanstrath, will serve as a technical fellow of Microsoft.
