According to an announcement published in the Microsoft 365 Message Center, support for the OneNote app designed for Windows 10 will officially end on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft will cease releasing updates, including those addressing security vulnerabilities.
This particular version of OneNote refers to the UWP edition pre-installed with Windows 10—a legacy application that has long stopped receiving feature enhancements. Until now, Microsoft had continued to issue security patches to ensure its safe usage.
With support for the consumer edition of Windows 10 also set to expire on October 14, 2025, Microsoft plans to discontinue support for the OneNote UWP version on the same day, meaning no further updates will be provided to address bugs or security concerns.
Microsoft encourages users to transition to the standard desktop version of OneNote, which it describes as the future of the application. This edition supports advanced capabilities, including Copilot AI integration, to enhance productivity.
The timeline is as follows:
March 2025: Official announcement released.
June 2025: Users of the Windows 10 OneNote app will begin to experience degraded sync performance, impacting real-time collaboration and multi-device access.
July 2025: Microsoft will display in-app banner notifications urging users to migrate to the new version.
October 2025: Support for the UWP version of OneNote will officially end on October 14. No further updates, security fixes, or bug resolutions will be provided beyond this point.
Users may download the latest version of OneNote from the Microsoft Store.
