Europol has announced the successful dismantling of a sophisticated network responsible for facilitating large-scale online fraud. This operation, led by German authorities with support from law enforcement agencies across Europe, has resulted in the seizure of over 50 servers, the arrest of two key suspects, and the disruption of a central hub for the trade of stolen data.

This customisation enabled criminals to carry out targeted fraud with greater efficiency,” Europol stated in their press release. The criminal network operated a marketplace where thousands of users could buy stolen data, including addresses, security answers, and even account balances, all conveniently sorted by region. This information, obtained through fraudulent phone calls impersonating bank employees, fueled a wave of targeted attacks against unsuspecting victims.

Investigators also uncovered a network of fake online shops designed to phish payment information from consumers. “The stolen credentials were then sold through the marketplace, generating significant profits for its operators,” Europol revealed.

The operation culminated on December 4th with coordinated actions across Europe. Searches were conducted in Germany and Austria, leading to the arrest of two main suspects. Simultaneously, crucial infrastructure linked to the marketplace and fake shops was dismantled in Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, and Norway, effectively disrupting the network’s operations.

Europol played a pivotal role in this investigation, providing a platform for cooperation and intelligence sharing between international law enforcement agencies. “Europol’s unique forensic capabilities played a pivotal role in advancing the case, offering tailored solutions to analyse and secure the complex digital evidence,” the agency emphasized.

By disrupting this network, law enforcement has protected countless individuals from falling victim to online fraud and sent a clear message to cybercriminals that their actions will not go unpunished.
