Protecting Malaysians’ Data: New Breach Notification System in Place
Malaysia is introducing a new data breach notification system aimed at prompt response and mitigation of cybersecurity incidents. This was announced by Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of Communications, Teo Nie Ching.
Under the new regulations, data users are required to immediately report any incidents of personal information breaches, including hacking threats. Teo Nie Ching explained that this approach will enable the swift analysis of incident information, the implementation of measures to prevent further breaches, and the monitoring of ongoing impacts.
The Deputy Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust in the country’s data management practices. To this end, Malaysia has launched a comprehensive campaign: law enforcement agencies, regulators, and various organizations are working together to inform citizens about the new notification system, tighten data handling rules, and strengthen control measures.
Teo Nie Ching noted that the advancement of digitalization inevitably brings an increase in potential technology abuse threats and a rise in fraud risks. Therefore, it is crucial to continuously adapt to the evolving tactics of malicious actors.
To address the issue comprehensively, Malaysia has established the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC). The center aims to ensure effective collaboration among various stakeholders, including information exchange, coordination of efforts, analysis of the need for legislative improvements, and addressing the global nature of fraudulent activities.
