RansomHub Targets Prasarana Malaysia: 316 GB of Stolen Data Threatened with Public Release
Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, the largest public transportation operator in Malaysia, has confirmed reports of unauthorized access to its internal systems, as previously circulated on social media. The incident is linked to a potential data breach of up to 316 GB, allegedly resulting from a ransomware attack.
Despite the breach, company representatives have stated that daily operations remain unaffected. Prasarana is currently collaborating with cybersecurity experts to investigate and mitigate the impact of the incident.
The company is also working closely with the National Cyber Security Agency and CyberSecurity Malaysia to ensure the full protection of its systems and to prevent future threats. Prasarana emphasized that their priority is to resolve the situation swiftly while maintaining a high level of service for passengers.
News of the cyberattack became public after a post on the platform X by FalconFeeds.io, a cybersecurity-focused platform. The post claimed that the group RansomHub, allegedly responsible for the attack, is threatening to release Prasarana’s data within a week.
RansomHub is a group that employs ransomware to lock access to systems or files by encrypting data and demanding a ransom for their recovery.
Prasarana operates an extensive network of transportation services under the RapidKL brand, including light rail, mass transit, and bus rapid transit systems (LRT, MRT, and BRT), as well as monorail and bus fleets in Kuala Lumpur.
The company has pledged to provide updates as new information becomes available and assured that they are doing everything possible to swiftly address the incident’s aftermath.
