Scam Alert: Fake Olympic Ticketing Websites Target Sports Fans
Cybersecurity firm Proofpoint has uncovered a widespread scam targeting eager Olympic fans. Hundreds of fraudulent websites have been identified, falsely claiming to sell tickets to the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games. One such site, “paris24tickets[.]com,” even appeared as a top sponsored search result on Google, misleading users with its professional design and seemingly legitimate features.
These fake websites are designed to steal money and personal information from unsuspecting victims. Users are urged to purchase tickets only from the official Olympic ticketing website to avoid falling prey to this scam.
According to Proofpoint, threat actors are capitalizing on the excitement surrounding the Olympics, using the event’s popularity to lure victims into their trap. The fraudulent sites often mimic the official ticketing website, making it difficult for users to differentiate between the two.
French authorities have already shut down 51 of the identified fraudulent websites and issued formal notices to 140 others. However, cybersecurity experts warn that new scam sites are likely to emerge as the Olympics draw closer.
“The only way to get tickets for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games is through the organization’s official ticketing website,” said a Proofpoint spokesperson. Be wary of any third-party websites offering Olympic tickets, and always verify the authenticity of the site before providing any personal or financial information.
The discovery of these fraudulent websites serves as a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity awareness and vigilance, particularly during major events like the Olympics. By staying informed and taking precautions, users can protect themselves from falling victim to online scams.
