Summit supercomputing machine in the U.S has become the fastest supercomputer in the world
The United States temporarily regained the top spot in the world supercomputer field. On June 8, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory announced that they have developed “Summit” supercomputer, the peak speed of floating-point operation can reach 200 petaflops. It is reported that this supercomputer is manufactured by IBM and equipped with nearly 28,000 NVIDIA GPUs and over 9000 supercomputers of IBM’s traditional processors.

China’s supercomputer became the strongest supercomputer in June 2013, the United States no longer has the most powerful supercomputer in the world. The official supercomputer ranking of the Global Supercomputer TOP500 will be updated at the end of this month, and the “Summit” supercomputer is expected to end this situation.
According to data published by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the experience of building Summit, which fills an area the size of two tennis courts, and its circulatory system consumes 4,000 gallons (approximately 15142 liters) of water per minute to cool down 37,000 processors. Using the results of the standard metrics for evaluating supercomputers, the vertex’s floating-point operations can reach speeds of up to 2 trillion operations per second. This is 100 times faster than the US supercomputer Titan. The United States Secretary of Energy Rick Perry believes that “Summit” supercomputer will have a profound impact on energy research, scientific discovery, economic competitiveness, and national security.
