The Birth of a Brand: Choosing a Descriptive Domain

Juliet would never have said, ”What’s in a name?” had Romeo been her domain name rather than an annoying boy, that’s for sure. A name is the most important part of an organization in that it is the first thing customers will experience and, as we all know, first impressions matter. Romeo didn’t know this. Look where that got him.

The guiding logic behind choosing a name for your organization should be what fits the best. What kind of name best communicates what you do? There are two types of names most commonly found on the Internet: descriptive and brandable. In this article, we’ll be looking at the descriptive kind. These are names you can get from cheap .com domain.

What Is a Descriptive Domain?

A descriptive domain relies on telling your customers exactly what they’re signing up for without trying to be stylish about it. Think about Facebook. Well, what exactly is a Facebook? Can you tell just from the name what it is? No.

What about dndbeyond.com? That, you can tell, has something to do with dungeons and dragons, at least. This is a descriptive name. There’s no need to keep them short, so don’t discard a long domain name suggestion!.

A good example of a long name is BookMyShow.com. Even before you visit the website, you have a good idea of what the company does. However, long names have the disadvantage of being more difficult to brand. This is because they can be generic and people won’t know how you stand out from your competition.

How to Pick a Descriptive Name for Your Company

The following tips are designed to help you pick or create a name that will help you make an impact. Let’s dig in!

Remember to Be Memorable

Choosing a memorable domain name for the business is an important first step in establishing your online identity. One of the most effective ways of getting your name out there is through word of mouth, and this will be far more easily achieved if you have a memorable name to share with your customers. Think about it: would you rather talk about a golf ball manufacturer named XYZ’s Golf Balls or Going-A-Round?

You have to pick a name that stands out in your target audience’s imagination. Bonus points if you can make them chuckle when they hear the name as this registers it in their memory. Plus, you can also get creative with what comes after the dot, which we also discuss in the next point. Going-a-around.balls is going to be a lot more memorable. We can guarantee that!

Improvise with Compromises

Let’s face the facts: your service is not unique. Thousands of people do what you do. How are you going to show them your uniqueness if you have to conform to get sales? Well, it’s time to get creative.

Suppose you sell homemade chocolates and you name your company after a family member. Something like Susie’s Chocolates. That’s nice and to the point, but if you have to register for a name and get something like Susies.choco, that’s a pretty innovative way of going about it!

Try to Include Keywords

You’re on the Internet, and in order to boost your sales and exposure, you’ll need to include keywords and play the SEO game. Luckily for you, there are a lot of keyword generators out there that will tell you what terms are most likely to be searched in your industry. Use a few of them cleverly. Getting close to the top on search results will work wonders for you and your business.

Avoid Being Vague

Your name can be as long or as short as you want it to be, but make sure that you aren’t being vague, no matter what you do. Your name should be able to tell people exactly what your business is about and what you can offer them. If they have to look at the name and wonder what it is about, you’ve pretty much lost them.

ABCS – Always Be Checking Spelling

One thing you want to make sure you do is being professional. If your clients don’t think you are capable of being professional, they’ll simply choose someone else. One of the most common ways to achieve that is to make sure you spellcheck every new addition. If people notice a mistake in your name, they’ll just think you’re dumb. You do not want that.

Conclusion

With a bold and unique name, you’ll stand out from the crowd and give visitors a clear picture of who you are. Your brand or business could benefit immensely from a longer name.
