The Chromium project, the open-source foundation for web browsers like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera, is getting a financial shot in the arm. Google, in partnership with The Linux Foundation, announced the launch of the Supporters of Chromium-based Browsers, a fund dedicated to fostering a sustainable ecosystem for Chromium development.
Since its inception in 2008, Chromium has become a cornerstone of the web, powering “hundreds of different projects globally, including big browsers like Chrome, home electronics from LG, application frameworks like Electron and even custom applications like Bloomberg terminals and SpaceX capsule control software.” While Google remains the primary contributor, making over 100,000 commits in 2024 alone, the company recognizes the need for broader support.
Maintaining Chromium is a massive undertaking. Google currently invests “hundreds of millions of US dollars in annual investment just for maintenance costs,” including infrastructure, testing, bug fixes, and code health. This new fund aims to alleviate some of that burden and encourage wider participation in the project’s development.
The Supporters of Chromium-based Browsers will be managed by The Linux Foundation, ensuring “open governance, prioritizing transparency, inclusivity, and community-driven development.” Initial members pledging their support include industry giants Meta, Microsoft, and Opera.
“Sustainable funding of critical open source infrastructure remains a hot industry-wide topic of discussion,” the announcement stated, acknowledging the concerns of many companies and developers who rely on Chromium. This initiative directly addresses those concerns by providing a clear avenue for financial contributions.
Google emphasizes its continued commitment to Chromium, stating: “We remain committed to being the responsible steward of the Chromium project and to the massive investment necessary to keep Chromium working well for the entire web industry.” This new fund, however, signals a shift towards a more collaborative approach, ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of this essential web technology.
