There is no doubt that Google Search has long been the dominant force in the search engine landscape. For years, its global market share has consistently exceeded 90%, meaning that nine out of every ten search queries worldwide have been completed through Google Search.
According to the latest statistics from StatCounter, Google Search’s global market share has fallen below the 90% threshold. Specifically, since October 2024, when its market share first dipped below 90%, it has not managed to recover. The most recent figure stands at 89.73%, marking the first time since 2015 that Google’s market share has dropped below this critical level.
StatCounter’s methodology involves analyzing tracking data from hundreds of websites. While the accuracy of such data may not be absolute, it serves as a valuable reference point.
As for the competitors gaining ground in Google’s wake, traditional search engines like Microsoft Bing, Yahoo Search, and Yandex have experienced slight but fluctuating increases in market share. However, StatCounter has not provided more granular data on this trend.
On the other hand, many users are abandoning traditional search engines in favor of alternative platforms. For example, a growing number of users are turning to AI-based search engines such as Perplexity and ChatGPT. Additionally, platforms like TikTok are increasingly being used to search for specific content of interest.
In the Chinese market, Baidu continues to hold its dominant position in the search engine sector. Although traditional search engines are unlikely to disappear in the near future, their importance will inevitably decline over time.
