uBlock Origin v1.74.0 Is the Final Version for Chrome Before Google’s Delisting

The developer behind the widely used ad-blocking extension uBlock Origin recently published version 1.74.0 for Google Chrome on the project’s homepage. In the release notes, the developer specifically emphasized that this version will also serve as the final release of uBlock Origin for Chrome. This is because Google is set to remove the extension from the Chrome Web Store on August 31, 2026.
Submitting a Final Version Ahead of the Delisting Deadline
uBlock Origin v1.74.0 is, on its own merits, an ordinary maintenance release rather than a major feature update. However, the development team pushed this release out before the end of the month specifically to submit it to Google in time. As a result, users who continue running uBlock Origin for Chrome should gradually receive this update. It will come through Google’s standard rollout mechanism.
Come August 31, 2026, Google will remove the extension from the Chrome Web Store – though this action isn’t targeted specifically at uBlock Origin. Rather, Google is removing every extension built on the Manifest V2 protocol across the board. In that sense, uBlock Origin v1.74.0 effectively becomes the extension’s final stable release. It will be the last version supporting Google Chrome.
Can Users Continue Using It?
In theory, users running current versions of Chrome will no longer be able to use uBlock Origin, since Google will push a cloud-delivered directive that forcibly disables all extensions built on Manifest V2. In practice, most MV2-based extensions have already been disabled. However, some users who modify certain registry settings may still be able to keep them running for the time being.
Whether the extension continues to function, then, largely depends on which version of Chrome a user is running and how their system is configured. Going forward, anyone wishing to keep using uBlock Origin for Chrome will need to rely on an older browser version, and will have to manually install the extension by downloading an offline installation package directly from GitHub – online installation and updates through the Chrome Web Store will no longer be possible.
Note: this does not mean development is ending, since other browsers will continue supporting the MV2-based version of uBlock Origin.
