Ubuntu 24.10, codenamed Oracular Oriole, was officially released on October 10, 2024. As a non-LTS (Long Term Support) release, its lifecycle is notably brief and will reach its end of support on July 10, 2025.
After this date, Canonical will cease to provide software and security updates for this version. Continuing to use it beyond the support window may expose users to unresolved software bugs and security vulnerabilities. Therefore, it is strongly advised to upgrade to a supported release.
One available option is Ubuntu 25.04, codenamed Plucky Puffin, which will receive support until February 2026. By that time, a new release will be available, allowing users to continue with a rolling upgrade cycle.
Ubuntu 25.04 ships with Linux Kernel 6.14, the Mesa 25 graphics stack, and the latest GNOME 48 desktop environment—delivering an improved experience over Ubuntu 24.10 in virtually every aspect.
For users who prefer a more stable and less frequently updated environment, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is a more suitable choice. This version offers a generous 10-year lifecycle and only requires periodic installation of software and security updates without the need for major version upgrades.
