Canonical has recently finalized the release roadmap for Ubuntu 26.10, an iteration predicated upon the foundation of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. Developmental endeavors are slated to commence on April 30, culminating in the formal debut of the stable version on October 15.
Codenamed the “Stonking Stingray,” Ubuntu 26.10 is an interim release and, as such, possesses a concise nine-month lifecycle. Unlike Long-Term Support (LTS) variants, these interim releases function as conduits for rapid innovation, offering users expedited access to the latest features and systemic enhancements.
Chronological projections suggest that Ubuntu 26.10 will natively incorporate Linux Kernel 7.2. Given that this kernel is anticipated for release in late August 2026, and the kernel freeze for the “Stonking Stingray” is not scheduled until October 1, there remains an ample window for its seamless integration.
The definitive release schedule for Ubuntu 26.10 is as follows:
- April 23, 2026: Launch of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, serving as the developmental precursor.
- April 30, 2026: Formal commencement of the Ubuntu 26.10 development cycle.
- August 20, 2026: Transition into the “Feature Freeze” phase.
- September 24, 2026: Commencement of public beta testing.
- October 1, 2026: Implementation of the “Kernel Freeze.”
- October 8, 2026: Entrance into the “Final Freeze” stage.
- October 15, 2026: Official release of the stable version.
- June 2027: End of Life (EOL); software updates and support will be discontinued.
