Although the source code for Oracle’s “Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel” (UEK) kernel is already available through the company’s own server, the organization is now releasing it to GitHub to increase the popularity of its Linux patch release.
The Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) is a Linux kernel built by Oracle and supported via Oracle Linux support. Its focus is performance, stability, and minimal backports by tracking the mainline source code as closely as is practical. UEK is well-tested and used to run Oracle’s Engineered Systems, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and large enterprise deployments for Oracle customers.
Oracle’s Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel will continue to focus on performance and stability while working with RHEL-derived Oracle Linux distributions. They now want to publish their source code changes to GitHub, increase UEK exposure, and increase use of users.
Projects include the legacy UEK2 kernel based on Linux 3.0 and the latest UEK4 kernel from the Linux 4.14 LTS source. The code is all hosted on the GitHub repository. Note that while the source code is hosted in the repository, the master branch of the repository only holds the project documentation. You need to switch to branch/UEK-version to see the actual source code.
Oracle posted this news on its blog and stated that since 2007, Oracle has contributed more than 400,000 lines of code to the Linux kernel.
