Xiaomi is redefining its Bootloader unlocking policy with the introduction of new rules effective January 1, 2025, coinciding with the rollout of its HyperOS. These updates aim to enhance security and streamline device management while making the unlocking process more regulated.
This shift marks a departure from the current policy, which allows users to unlock up to three devices. While Xiaomi assures users that this change is aimed at improving security and streamlining the unlocking process, it has sparked debate among the tech community.
Here’s a breakdown of the key changes:
- One Device Limit: Say goodbye to unlocking multiple devices with a single Xiaomi account. Starting next year, each account will be tied to just one unlockable device.
- Deadline for Existing Permissions: If you’ve already been granted permission to unlock your bootloader under the current policy (between November 8, 2023 and December 31, 2024), you have until the end of this year to use it. Any unused permissions will expire at 23:59 on December 31, 2024.
- Re-locking for HyperOS Migration: MIUI users with unlocked bootloaders will need to re-lock them to receive HyperOS update notifications.
- Time-Bound Unlocking Permissions
Unlocking permissions come with strict time limits, requiring users to adhere to specific timelines to avoid losing access to their granted permissions. - Consideration of Waiting Periods
Users must account for the time between device binding and unlocking to ensure permissions do not expire before completion.
While Xiaomi hasn’t explicitly stated the reasons behind this policy shift, it’s likely aimed at curbing the resale of unlocking privileges and enhancing security. However, this change has drawn criticism from tech enthusiasts and developers who rely on bootloader unlocking for testing and custom ROM development.
For professional Xiaomi users who often work with multiple devices, this new policy presents a significant hurdle. They will need to manage multiple Xiaomi accounts, each associated with a different phone number, and navigate the unlocking process for each device individually.
It’s important to note that these changes apply exclusively to users and devices in mainland China. Users outside of mainland China should refer to their regional bootloader unlocking policies.
This policy update has ignited discussions about the balance between user freedom and device security. Whether these changes will ultimately benefit the Xiaomi ecosystem remains to be seen.
