Ubuntu provided a smaller image file for the upcoming Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, only 28MB

Ddos March 17, 2018 1 minute read

Dustin Kirkland, vice president of product development at Canonical, stated that the smallest image file for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS has shrunk by 10% to 28MB (the root file system is already compressed), while the 16.04 LTS base image is 37MB and the 14.04 LTS base image is 65MB.

It should be noted that this is not the same as the “Minimize Installation” option that was added to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, which allows you to choose not to install a bunch of pre-installed software to provide a better and more streamlined experience.

For Ubuntu Base, Dustin Kirkland take a look at the Ubuntu wiki’s explanation of it –

“Ubuntu Base is a minimal rootfs for use in the creation of custom images for specific needs. Ubuntu Base strives to create a suitable minimal environment for use in Board Support Packages, constrained or integrated environments, as the basis for application demonstration images, or Linux containers such as LXC or Docker.”

Ubuntu Base provides a fully available user space environment with full access to Ubuntu repositories.
