OpenAI has announced that by the end of 2025 it will officially launch “ChatGPT for Teens”, a version of its AI platform specifically designed for users aged 13 to 18. This new edition aims to strengthen privacy and safety protections while equipping parents with enhanced management tools, ensuring that young people enjoy a healthier and more secure interaction with AI.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT for Teens will be automatically enabled whenever the system cannot confidently verify that a user is over 18, thereby safeguarding their privacy and data. The company emphasized that when it comes to younger audiences, the platform must strike a delicate balance between privacy, freedom, and safety, with the latter remaining the highest priority.
Parents or guardians will be able to link their accounts to their teenager’s profile via an invitation system. They will also gain the ability to manage key settings, such as whether conversation memory is enabled, whether chat histories are retained, and even establish “restricted hours” to prevent late-night overuse. Furthermore, if the system detects signs of acute distress or potential mental health risks, parents will receive immediate alerts, allowing them to intervene early.
This initiative reflects growing concerns in the United States over the mental health risks faced by teenagers. Recent studies have suggested that extended interaction with generative AI may intensify feelings of isolation or psychological stress. In response, U.S. lawmakers are planning congressional hearings to examine the impact of AI products on minors, while the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has opened investigations into OpenAI, Meta, Google, and others to evaluate whether their AI chat services pose potential harm.
In August of this year, a tragic case further amplified public scrutiny: a U.S. parent alleged that their 16-year-old son took his own life following interactions with ChatGPT, filing a lawsuit against OpenAI and arguing that the platform bore partial responsibility. This case heightened industry awareness of the risks and accelerated OpenAI’s push to deliver a dedicated teen version of its service.
OpenAI has stated that ChatGPT for Teens will be rolled out in phases, with features refined based on feedback from both users and parents. The company also noted that future collaborations with schools and educational institutions are under consideration, aiming to foster environments where teens can learn and create safely with AI, rather than use it solely for entertainment.
As generative AI becomes ever more woven into daily life, ensuring that adolescents can explore its potential in a secure environment has emerged as a shared challenge for the global tech industry. OpenAI’s latest initiative may well set a new standard for safeguarding teenage users, prompting other AI platforms to follow suit.
