The AlmaLinux OS Foundation has officially announced the release of AlmaLinux OS 10, codenamed Purple Lion. This latest version introduces a suite of new features and technical enhancements, designed to deliver a more robust, enterprise-grade Linux experience for its users.
Built from the same source code as RHEL 10 and maintaining full binary compatibility, AlmaLinux OS 10 distinguishes itself by extending support beyond what RHEL 10 offers. While RHEL 10 exclusively supports the x86_64-v3 architecture, AlmaLinux OS 10 expands EPEL support to the x86_64-v2 architecture, ensuring up to ten years of security updates even on older hardware.
In its release notes, the AlmaLinux OS Foundation stated:
“The goal of AlmaLinux OS is to support our community, and AlmaLinux OS 10 is the best example of that yet. With an unwavering eye on maintaining compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), we have made small improvements to AlmaLinux OS 10 that target specific sections of our userbase. They are for users who require them and know how to use them. Anyone using AlmaLinux OS and anticipating RHEL compatibility will be happy to know that AlmaLinux 10, just as its predecessors, is fully compatible with RHEL 10.”
Key Features and Technical Highlights Include:
- SPICE Protocol Support: Simplified protocol for standalone computing environments, enhancing the remote desktop experience
- KVM Virtualization for IBM Power Architecture: Currently in technical preview, offering virtualization capabilities on IBM Power systems
- Secure Boot for ARM Platforms: Reinforces the security posture of ARM-based devices by reducing exposure to potential threats
- Frame Pointer Support: Enables improved diagnostics and application performance optimization
- Linux Kernel Upgrade: Now based on the Linux Kernel 6.12 LTS release
