The European Organization for Nuclear Research, which operates the Large Hadron Collider, recently announced that it will migrate more than 2,200 industrial computers and embedded devices within its accelerator control system to Debian 13 before the close of 2026. Scattered across a facility spanning roughly 43 square kilometers, these machines connect to over 17,000 devices and shoulder the front-end control of the accelerator.
Red Hat’s Raised CPU Baseline Is the Principal Driver
For years, CERN relied heavily upon the Red Hat ecosystem. After CentOS was gradually phased out, it migrated to AlmaLinux, a Red Hat-compatible distribution. This latest decision, however, stems chiefly from Red Hat raising the minimum x86-64 processor requirement at the instruction-set level.
RHEL 9 mandated a baseline of x86-64-v2, and RHEL 10 lifted it further to x86-64-v3. Yet roughly 47 percent of CERN’s accelerator control computers still run v1-class processors, which would render them unusable after such an upgrade. As the CERN engineers explained, tracking future Red Hat releases would eventually force the replacement of much of this hardware.
For scientific research and industrial control, however, the prolonged use of aging processors poses no genuine problem. Were CERN to persist with the Red Hat ecosystem, it would have to upgrade these machines. Upgrading so vast a fleet would evidently invite enormous trouble.
Research and Industrial Equipment Is Bound to Specialized Hardware
The industrial control computers CERN employs connect to numerous peripherals through diverse links, often binding to field equipment via dedicated control-card hardware. Consequently, any attempt to swap processors or other components would demand fresh compatibility validation and scheduled maintenance downtime.
Cost, naturally, is another consideration. CERN estimates that replacing the relevant hardware to remain compatible could reach CHF 5.4 million. Migrating to Debian 13 sidesteps these burdens entirely, since Debian 13 preserves a lower instruction-set baseline and allows the existing devices to soldier on without any hardware replacement.
Data Centers and Similar Environments Will Remain on Red Hat
CERN nevertheless stresses that this migration concerns chiefly the hardware tied to accelerator front-end control. Its data centers and other computing environments will continue to run the Red Hat ecosystem, encompassing both RHEL and the compatible AlmaLinux.
The transition is not without toolchain hurdles. CERN engineers note that Debian lacks certain automated-build and package-publishing tools suited to their environment. Furthermore, its support for multiple concurrent versions of the same package remains limited. Accordingly, the migration also compels adjustments to internal workflows.
