As the deadline imposed by the Trump administration for TikTok’s U.S. operations to resolve their future approaches, an increasing number of companies appear interested in acquiring the platform. Most recently, Amazon has reportedly entered the fray, expressing interest in purchasing TikTok’s American division and engaging in discussions with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick.
The current deadline for TikTok’s U.S. operations to determine a path forward is set for April 5. However, former President Trump has previously indicated that, if necessary, this deadline could be extended.
Amazon’s reported interest in acquiring TikTok’s U.S. operations suggests a growing pool of contenders, including a consortium led by YouTuber MrBeast with financial backing from Roblox CEO David Baszucki, as well as Project Liberty—a coalition involving Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, a former owner of the Dodgers, and other prominent figures. Additionally, Perplexity AI, an emerging player in the artificial intelligence space, is said to be exploring integration of short-form videos into its services.
While Amazon has not commented on the matter, industry observers speculate that the company could leverage TikTok’s vast troves of video data to enhance AI training or further refine its e-commerce algorithms and services.
As for ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, it has yet to confirm how it intends to maintain TikTok’s presence in the U.S. market. Options under consideration may include the partial sale of equity, or the formation of a new joint venture with at least 50% American ownership. Nonetheless, mounting regulatory constraints and political pressures within China may severely limit ByteDance’s ability to pursue such strategies, making TikTok’s continued presence in the U.S. increasingly uncertain.
