As the podcast market continues its upward trajectory, Amazon has initiated a sweeping reorganization of its audio content division. A centerpiece of this move is the restructuring of Wondery—the podcast network it acquired for approximately $300 million in 2020. The realignment entails the segmentation of Wondery and a strategic recalibration of Amazon’s broader audio content initiatives. According to Bloomberg, the overhaul will affect around 110 employees, and Wondery’s current CEO, Jen Sargent, will depart.
Amazon stated that it remains committed to podcast production but will now refine its approach to better align with the increasingly diversified ways audiences engage with and consume podcast content. The reorganization centers on two principal axes: narrative-driven programming and creator-led content.
Narrative podcasts such as American Scandal and Business Wars will be folded into the Audible team, Amazon’s flagship audio storytelling arm, while retaining the Wondery brand. The Wondery Plus subscription service and mobile app will also continue operating.
Wondery Plus currently offers early access to select shows; however, whether all existing features of the app will be preserved remains to be seen. This strategic shift underscores Amazon’s continued belief in the long-term value of original narrative content and its aim to amplify reach through the more mature Audible platform.
Conversely, celebrity-hosted shows—like New Heights with NFL stars Jason and Travis Kelce, and Armchair Expert hosted by Hollywood actor Dax Shepard—will transition to a newly formed unit called Creator Services. This team will focus on fostering partnerships with creators and scaling podcast growth, with a particular emphasis on attracting major advertising opportunities.
Amazon noted that these celebrity-driven productions differ markedly from traditional podcasts in terms of audience behavior, content discovery, and monetization. With video-centric platforms like YouTube rising in prominence, visually oriented podcasts have emerged as a dominant trend, necessitating distinct market strategies and operational frameworks.
Steve Boom, Amazon’s Vice President overseeing Audio, Twitch, and Gaming, wrote in an internal memo: “The podcast landscape has evolved significantly over the past few years. As video podcasting has grown in popularity, we have learned that creator-led, video-integrated shows have different audience needs and require distinct discovery, growth and monetization strategies compared to audio-first, narrative series. The rise of video has also blurred the lines on what it means to be a podcast creator.”
His remarks reflect Amazon’s acute awareness of shifting podcast dynamics and reinforce the importance of tailored strategies for distinct content categories in order to respond effectively to a transforming market.
Though the reorganization involves the elimination of more than a hundred positions, Amazon told The Verge that affected employees may be offered opportunities to transition into other roles within the company to continue their career development.
Amazon’s acquisition of Wondery in 2020 came during a period of explosive growth in the podcasting industry. At the time, Wondery was celebrated for its high-quality narrative programming and was one of the fastest-growing independent podcast studios in the world. However, amid an evolving media landscape—with platforms like Spotify and YouTube heavily investing in video podcasts, and the broader rise of the creator economy—Amazon has been compelled to reassess its audio content strategy and business configuration.
This restructuring is more than just an internal categorization of content—it reflects a broader industry shift. For large platforms navigating the rapidly transforming podcasting ecosystem, adaptability and strategic resource integration are imperative to retain creators, solidify user bases, and evolve sustainable business models.
