Before the official commencement of Google I/O 2025, Google unveiled several upcoming innovations through “The Android Show: I/O Edition.” Among the highlights, Android 16 will adopt the new Material 3 Expressive design language and expand its Gemini AI services across smartwatches, in-car systems, and smart TVs. Notably, the AI-powered capabilities will also extend to the forthcoming mixed-reality headset developed in collaboration with Samsung. Additionally, the formerly named “Find My Device” feature will be rebranded as “Find My Center,” signaling broader functionality across diverse user scenarios and platforms.
Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem, noted that the Android operating system is now actively used on over 3 billion devices across more than 190 countries worldwide, driving the evolution of a wide array of Android-powered hardware.
Android 16 will debut initially on Pixel devices, with a streamlined rollout for other brands to follow. The new Material 3 Expressive language aims to infuse a more personalized aesthetic into Android devices, enhancing user interaction and making device navigation and communication more intuitive.
Moreover, the design language will also be integrated into Wear OS 6, with enhancements expected to improve power efficiency—potentially extending battery life by approximately 10% post-upgrade.
Google further revealed that Gemini AI services will soon be available not only on mobile phones but also on wearables, in-car infotainment systems, smart TVs, and the aforementioned mixed-reality headset co-developed with Samsung, expected to launch later this year. These capabilities will also extend to headphone lines from Sony and Samsung, enabling users to interact naturally with their devices through voice-driven AI experiences.
Leveraging AI, Google also introduced a feature that analyzes text messages on Android to help users identify potential scams. The newly rebranded “Find My Center” will support more precise location tracking across various devices and individuals, while also offering seamless location sharing with family and friends. Collaborations with third-party tracking device providers are set to further enhance this experience, giving users a powerful hub for locating and managing their connected devices.
Google is expected to unveil additional details during the upcoming Google I/O 2025, with a strong emphasis on the evolution and integration of Gemini AI, as well as further insights into the Android OS updates.
