Android Security Update Patches 56 Security Vulnerabilities Including Critical RCE Bugs
June 2023 comes with a gust of vigilance for Android users. Google, in its most recent security update, addresses 56 vulnerabilities plaguing Android devices, including three critical remote code execution (RCE) bugs and a previously exploited Mali GPU flaw used as a zero-day by an anonymous spyware vendor.
These security updates display Google’s unstinted commitment to fortifying the defenses of Android’s complex architecture that includes the framework, system, Arm components, Imagination Technologies, Unisoc, Widevine DRM, and Qualcomm components.
Among the 10 issues confronted in the Android Framework, a noteworthy one is the critical RCE bug identified as CVE-2023-21127. Google candidly describes the precarious nature of this issue: “The most severe vulnerability in this section could lead to remote code execution with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is needed for exploitation.” This vulnerability allows unauthorized users to remotely execute commands that compromise data security and privacy.
Further amplifying the severity scale, Google fixed two critical RCE bugs in the Android system, labeled CVE-2023-21108 and CVE-2023-21130. The tech giant explains, “The most severe vulnerability in this section could lead to remote code execution over Bluetooth, if HFP support is enabled, with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.” This statement signifies that the threat vector can breach defenses without any user interaction, making it a high-priority fix.
The June 2023 security patch also includes an integrated patch for CVE-2022-22706, a high-severity flaw discovered in the Mali GPU kernel driver from Arm. This flaw, Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG) believes, was potentially exploited in a stealthy spyware campaign targeting Samsung phones.
